Two regional construction firms have received 2014 Excellence in Construction awards from the Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors for their work on Diakon projects.

Wohlsen Construction, based in Lancaster, received an Excellence Award in the “Commercial $10 to $25 million” category for its work on the new health care center at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, a Diakon Senior Living Community in Lewisburg, Pa.

Benchmark Construction, of Brownstown, Lancaster County, received an Excellence Award in the “Residential Renovation, Multi-Unit” category for its extensive renovations to the skilled nursing and personal care centers at Luther Crest, a Diakon Lutheran Senior Living Community in Allentown, Pa.

Dedicated in September 2013, the Buffalo Valley health care center features a modified-neighborhood concept that creates a more homelike and less institutional environment. The 102-bed center consists of five neighborhoods—four residential and one for short-term rehabilitation, each equipped with private country kitchen and common living area. The center also features a state-of-the-art, 1,900-square-foot physical therapy suite to assist residents with short- and longer-term rehabilitation.

Wohlsen’s work included preconstruction and construction-management services on the core building area, wings, physical therapy suite, common space, and administrative offices.

The Buffalo Valley project was designed by SFCS Architects of Roanoke, Va.

The recent work at Luther Crest represents the final phases of a multi-year repositioning project. The Benchmark project transformed the health-care rooms and common areas from a traditional medical model to a residential concept. The project updated interior finishes in 45 skilled care and 30 personal care suites as well as within hallways, dining rooms, common areas, therapy and medical rooms, nursing stations, and bathing areas. The work included the addition of a 3,100-square-foot country kitchen.

The Luther Crest project was designed by Stewart & Conners Architects of North Carolina.

The winners are eligible to enter at the national level and compete against projects from all 70 ABC chapters.
